Graduate Student Fellowships

Graduate Student Fellowships

Thanks to a generous gift from our fall 2019 Branigin Lecturer, Dame Hilary Boulding, the IAS is pleased to offer small research grants up to $1000 to advanced Graduate Students. For summer 2020 (broadly, projects and programs undertaken between March and October 2020 are eligible), two fellowships are available.

  1. To support a public-facing program that is integral the candidate's research
  2. To support research that requires the use of non-IU archive, repository or collection

Any questions can be directed to ias@indiana.edu.

All fellows are required to coordinate with the Institute for Advanced Study to plan a presentation on their work—this can be in the form of a work-in-progress seminar, conference paper, or similiar event.

This fellowship provides funding for a public-facing project that is an integral part of the applicant's research trajectory. Strong preference will be given for projects that make use of IUB research repositories and collections. (For a list of potential repositories see here.) Applicants must demonstrate need for the funds. Such public-facing elements include, but are not limited to, exhibitions, performances, talks, websites, databases, studies, or programs. Candidates who make use of an IUB repository must receive prior approval for their project from their chosen research repository(ies). For this fellowship, funding should primarily be used for programming expenses, such as digitization fees or event planning. This fellowship is not limited to any discipline or school.

This fellowship supports the research trajectory of advanced graduate students by facilitating engagement with primary source material held by institutions or communities outside of IU Bloomington. Applicants should demonstrate their need to visit a particular archive, repository, collection, or site. Candidates should demonstrate that they are taking the appropriate steps to gain access to their chosen repository. For this fellowship, funding should primarily be used to offset travel expenses or other expenses as required, such as digitization fees, membership fees, etc. Additionally, applicants may apply for funds to access materials from outside repositories, such as data sets or digitized materials, without any travel. This fellowship is not limited to any discipline or school.
