Research awards
Applications for Individual Research and Collaborative Awards are accepted twice a year in fall and spring award cycles. Requests to host Conversations and applications for funds to support Conferences at IUB are accepted on a rolling basis.
Objective: To enable tenured associate professors to prepare publications, performances, exhibits, and grant proposals that draw upon to expertise of a group of faculty, be they colleagues at IU or at other institutions; to enable tenured associate professors to gain new knowledge or skill for future publications, performances, exhibits, and grant proposals by visiting one or more scholars' at those scholars' institution or by hosting said scholars at IUB.
Tenured associate professors may apply for funds to support consultations or collaborations for the following purposes:
1. Publications and Creative Activity: Tenured associate professor-initiated groups may apply for funds up to a total of $10,000 for two years to form an IAS working group of two or more faculty members from IUB and/or other institutions. The purpose will be to prepare manuscripts for the publication of major articles, books, or book chapters, or other forms of creative and scholarly activity. Awards may be renewed on a competitive basis for an additional two years based on timely and complete progress reports.
2. Grant Preparation: Tenured associate professor-initiated groups may apply for research funds up to a total of $10,000 for one year for the purpose of developing collaborative proposals to be submitted to external funding agencies. Awards may be renewed on a competitive basis for an additional year based on timely and complete progress reports.
3. New Knowledge or Skill: For the purpose of gaining new knowledge or skill, associate professors may apply for up to $10,000 to visit and work with one or more fellow scholars at another institution, or to invite one or more colleagues from another institution to visit IUB.
Objective: To enable tenured associate professors to host conferences that will allow them and colleagues from IUB and other institutions to share, refine, and magnify work in progress. Our expectation is that conferences will take place at IUB. They should lead to publications, performances, grant proposals or exhibits that will help applicants advance towards promotion.
Conference funds are available up to $15,000. Funds are to be used only for the payment of honoraria and travel expenses for visiting scholars and artists and essential promotional materials for these programs. Conference awards may not be used for hosting a regular meeting of a regional, national, or international association or working group. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional funding from other sources as necessary. Grant recipients are responsible for promotional activities and conference logistics, as well as travel and lodging arrangements for visitors. One or more faculty may apply for these grants. Applications should be written in a language comprehensible to a diverse group of scholars specializing in a range of fields.
Objective: To enable tenured associate professors to develop new research ideas and plans with colleagues within IU.
The Institute will sponsor informal discussion groups at the request of tenured associate professors seeking to develop new research topics and directions. The aim of these “conversations” will be to generate feedback on new ideas and to spark collaborative projects such as those included above under IAS Collaborative Fellowships.
Objective: To support the general research needs of tenured associate professors. Awards may be used for travel, purchase of books, research materials, research assistance, or contributions for publications.
Tenured associate professors may apply for research funds up to a total of $3,000 for a period of two years. Awards may be renewed on a competitive basis for an additional two years based on timely and complete progress reports.
