Democracy & Collections: Archives, Libraries, Museums, 2020-2021

In the 2020-21 academic year, IU’s Institute for Advanced Study will sponsor a series of monthly lectures featuring a different local archive, library, or museum. One or more speakers representing each repository will make a presentation about how that institution’s collections and initiatives connect to democracy. The broad themes of representation, access, or dissemination, all key tenets of democracy, will be used as organizing ideas. This series will introduce students to the breadth and depth of the archives, libraries, and museums that surround us and demonstrate various research methodologies and topics that may be pursued in each.

This series has been adapted to move online as a precaution against COVID-19. 

Humanizing the 1% and the 99%: Engaging with the Sage Collection

The second event of this series is a partnership with the Sage Collection. Heather Akou, Sage Director and Associate Professor in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design, will give a talk titled, "Humanizing the 1% and the 99%: Engaging the Sage Collection."

Examining Bias in Archival Description

The third session will be on "Examining Bias in Archival Description," will be led by Sarah Milligan, a Hyle Family Endowed Professor and Head of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program from Oklahoma State University.
