INTRODUCING CROSSROADS

IU’s Institute for Advanced Study is pleased to announce Crossroads—Collaborative Research Opportunities Supporting Scholarly Networks and Development—a new program of targeted workshops to help move major IU Bloomington faculty research projects toward completion. Collaboratively designed and funded by the Chancellor’s Office, the program will support workshops to bring external reviewers and IUB faculty members together at a point when reviewer feedback can meaningfully strengthen the final work.

WHAT IS CROSSROADS?

Crossroads workshops are designed to offer faculty members substantive feedback on their manuscript or other work. The gatherings will include at least one external reviewer along with colleagues from IU, all nominated by the award recipient. Workshops will be organized primarily as in-person gatherings but may be offered in hybrid format to accommodate external reviewers abroad. External reviewers will read or otherwise review the entire work and offer applicants written feedback. IU colleagues will be asked to read and comment on select portions of the work. All will convene to discuss the work.
Projects may include scholarly books and monographs as well as other comparable large-scale scholarly or creative work intended for public dissemination. Works may include (but are not limited to) exhibits, performances, or creation of datasets. Crossroads is best suited to work that is well underway but still open to substantive revision. Faculty from any department, discipline, or school may apply.

LOGISTICS

Two calls per year are planned for Crossroads applications. Applicants will be asked to submit a brief project overview, including a description of the project and the questions at its center, along with an explanation of the contributions it will make; a description of the project’s current stage and projected timeline to completion; a justification for why a Crossroads workshop at this stage will be useful and what reviewers might help the applicant think through; a list of prospective reviewers; and an overview of the stage you envision the project being at one year after the workshop. Evaluation criteria will include consideration of the overview and projected impact, project’s degree of completion, feasibility, list of reviewers, and expected outcomes.
