A Translation Seminar with Sandra Smith
Sandra Smith's new translation of Camus' "L'Etranger" was published in the UK in 2012 as "The Outsider." It was the fifth published translation of the work since 1946. In this seminar, she will discuss her approach to translation in general, explore five major translation problems in the work, and demonstrate how each of the translators solved them.
Sandra Smith has translated 12 novels by Irène Némirovsky, a new translation of Camus’ The Outsider, The Necklace and Other Stories: Maupassant for Modern Times and But you did not come back by Marceline Loridan-Ivens; she has three new books coming out this year. Smith’s translation of Némirovsky’s Suite Française won the French-American Foundation and Florence Gould Foundation Translation Prize, the PEN Translation Prize and was voted Book of the Year in 2007 by The Times of London. Her translation was also adapted into a film in 2015. After teaching at Cambridge for many years, she currently lives in New York.
