Afro-Atlantic Legacies aims to present to Brazil and the US a previously unknown side of the work of African American linguist Lorenzo Turner in Bahia in 1940 and 1941. The project aims to return sound and photo archives collected by Turner to the Afro-Brazilian religious communities in which they originated by providing an edited and commented selection of songs, prayers, and stories sung and recounted in Yoruba, Fon, Kikongo, and Kimbundu. These include recordings of Martiniano do Bonfim, Menininha do Gantois, Joãozinho da Goméia, and Manoel Falefá, among other historic figures in Afro-Brazilian culture—illustrious representatives of one of the most beautiful and fascinating Afro-Atlantic religions in the Americas: Candomblé. The project plans to release a 4 CD-set, a catalogue, and a documentary film in October 2019.
