Nate Howard is a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Indiana University, where his research focuses on European Christian responses to Muslim custodianship of the Holy Land in the centuries prior to the crusades. His dissertation integrates the methods of the digital humanities with traditional close reading approaches to examine how pilgrimage texts and the spaces they described combined to alter Latin and Greek Christians' relationship to their sacred sites and the Muslim authorities who oversaw them. Prior to joining IAS, he worked as a digital methods specialist for the Institute for the Digital Arts and Humanities (IDAH) on campus.
