Working Group for Recently-Tenured Associate Professors
The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) and the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs (VPFAA) have come together to design an initiative for recently-tenured IUB faculty, which will set them on a path to promotion through career development workshops, small group discussions focusing on faculty projects, and targeted research support. This program is open to faculty regardless of discipline or school. Working group members will be selected on the basis of their commitment to the program, as well as our need to include faculty of diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and schools. Applications are due Sunday, August 12, 2018, though earlier submissions will be appreciated. Notification of acceptance into the Working Group Program will be sent on Monday, August 20.
During academic year 2018–19, members of the pilot working group (approximately twelve associate professors tenured in 2016, 2017 or 2018) will attend a monthly VPFAA-led career development workshop hosted at the IAS. These workshops will be held three times per semester and will be available via digital recordings for members and others who were unable to attend.
The twelve associate professors will be divided into two small groups, each of which will meet within one or two weeks following each workshop for a group discussion at a fixed, mutually convenient time. These monthly meetings will provide an opportunity for each small group (six associate professors maximum) to begin preparing individual research plans as well as to consider the substance of the prior workshop and other issues relating to promotion. These monthly group meetings will be led by a full professor. The two full professor leaders will also hold approximately two open office hours per month at the IAS for members of their small groups. These office hours, which will be prearranged and announced, will provide additional, individualized mentoring opportunities for group members. Additional office hours or appointments may be arranged.
By the end of spring semester 2019, working group members will have had the opportunity to:
- become familiar with policies governing promotion in their units, schools and the campus;
- establish goals relevant to those policies;
- identify possible mentors and determine when to seek their advice;
- work on a timeline and identify resources to meet goals;
- devise approaches to balancing research, teaching, service, and personal life;
- understand how to document excellence in research, teaching, and service for promotion review based on any of these components or on a balanced case;
- prepare a multi-year work plan and submit it by the end of spring semester 2019.
Compensation and support
Upon completion and submission of their work plans, working group members will receive funding up to a maximum of $8,000. These funds will be placed in each member's research account and can be used for any research-related expense, such as research assistance, equipment, travel, a consultation/ collaborative project, a workshop led by a scholar in the member's field, or participation in any program of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD). Funding will be released according to the individualized schedule of milestones indicated in each member's research plan and timeline. Each working group member will prepare a brief report on project activities and expenditures before a subsequent release of funds can be made. The IAS will provide a cumulative form for these reports.
