Making Meaningful Service Contributions: Planning and Documenting Impact
Friday, January 18
1:30–2:30pm

Tenure and promotion are often accompanied by increased expectations for involvement in departmental and university activities as well as in one’s areas of expertise within a specific discipline. Additionally, criteria for promotion to full professor incorporate meaningful service contributions into the evaluation of one’s impact, both locally and professionally. This workshop explores the process of identifying meaningful service activities and connecting that work to overarching goals and planning. The conversation will include suggestions for ensuring that research productivity as well as teaching and mentoring opportunities are enhanced and protected despite these increasing responsibilities.

Contributions in Teaching and Mentoring: Leadership, Innovation, and Impact
Friday, February 22
1:30–2:30pm

Although student evaluations may be viewed as the cornerstone of a promotion dossier, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate leadership, curricular development, innovation, and successful mentoring over the course of time in rank. As one plans for promotion to full professor it is helpful to engage in activities that allow for the development of a profile with evidence of reflection and achievement across these areas. This workshop will identify the many ways that impact through teaching and mentoring may be achieved and documented. The conversation will address how teaching activities may be integrated into thoughtful long-term planning.

Planning a Path to Promotion: Establishing Impact through Research and Creative Activity
Friday, April 5
1:30–2:30pm

Progress after tenure in research or creative activity can include expansion toward greater depth and/or breadth, and even work in entirely new directions. Making the most of one’s time in the rank of associate professor involves engagement in scholarship and creative activity that builds one’s reputation and makes a positive impact on the university and the professional community. This workshop explores questions related to identifying the next project (or set of projects), creating a multi-year plan to move toward promotion, and documenting impact along that trajectory.
