Kristina Downs holds a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University and an M.A. in Folklore from George Mason University. Her dissertation examined representations of Native American heroines in the United States and Mexico in relation to colonialism, national identity, race, and gender. She is Managing Editor of the Journal of Folklore Research and recently co-organized the Future of American Folkloristics (FOAF) conference. Previously, Kristina taught at Northern Virginia Community College and has worked with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
