Shahzeen Attari’s research draws on psychological and environmental science to examine the perceptions, motivations, and biases that shape how people use natural resources, understand environmental systems, and respond to climate change. Her work has explored how people perceive energy and water use, how climate communicators’ carbon footprints influence their audiences, and how people envision the future energy system.

She is Director of the Indiana University Institute for Advanced Study (IUIAS) and the Paul H. O’Neill Professor at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington. As Director of IUIAS, she aims to provide scholars with the time and intellectual community to pursue challenging questions, make connections across fields, and develop bold new ideas.

Before joining Indiana University, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University’s Earth Institute and Center for Research on Environmental Decisions. She holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
